We’re really excited to land these updates and keep moving Beaker towards becoming a powerful runtime for browsing and peer-to-peer computing.
Sometimes you just need to give your eyes a break! Dark mode will follow your system setting by default, but you can also enable it in the Beaker settings.
Tiling Window Manager
In previous versions of Beaker, we had a builtin sidebar with a hard-coded editor, files explorer, and terminal. Wouldn’t it be nice if users could replace our builtin apps or add new ones?
To solve this, we decided to replace the sidebar with a tiling window-manager. This makes it possible to open multiple web “panes” within a single tab and navigate them independently. Not only does this replace the sidebar – it makes for a fun new way to browse the Web. Be sure to watch the Beta 6 Overview Video to get a feel for how this works.
As a result of this change, Beaker’s editor, files-explorer, and terminal now act like typical apps. We’re going to keep working toward “userlanding” these builtins so that it becomes easier to replace or augment them with your own tools.
Like the sidebar, the toolbar was hardcoded to only the editor, files explorer, and terminal. With this release, we integrated the toolbar with bookmarks so that you can add any link you want.
